Joint simulation

Wear of hip joints

Leeds II Physiological Anatomical Hip Joint Simulator
The Leeds II Physiological Hip Joint Simulator has six articulating stations with two independently controlled motions: flexion-extension and rotation of the cup. A cyclic compressive load is applied in the vertical axis.

iMBE has 2 Leeds II Simulators.

Typical test involves 3 experimental and 3 control prosthesis samples. Wear is measured gravimetrically or geometrically (polyethylene).

Load : Paul Cycle (as per ISO 14242-1 (2002))
Cycle rate : 1 Hz
Motion: Physiological
Orientation : Anatomical
Lubricant : 25% bovine serum, 0.03% Sodium Azide
Test Condition: With and without micro-separation

Micro-separation simulates typical ‘in-vivo’ wear patterns with hard-on-hard bearing combinations.

Typical test duration: 5 million cycles (6 months)
Measurement intervals: 0, 1, 3, 5 million cycles
Lubricant change: Every 330,000 cycles

For further information please contact Dr Louise Jennings, Research & Laboratory Manager.

Prosim Physiological Anatomical Hip Joint Simulator

The Leeds/Prosim hip joint simulator has ten stations with two independently controlled motions: flexion-extension and rotation of the cup. A cyclic compressive load is applied in the vertical axis.

iMBE has 2 Prosim Simulators.

Typical test involves 5 experimental and 5 control prosthesis samples. Wear is measured gravimetrically or geometrically (polyethylene).

Load : Paul Cycle (as per ISO 14242-1 (2002))
Cycle rate : 1 Hz
Motion: Physiological
Orientation : Normal, upright
Lubricant : 25% bovine serum, 0.03% Sodium Azide

Typical test duration: 5 million cycles (6 months)
Measurement intervals: 0, 1, 3, 5 million cycles
Lubricant change: Every 330,000 cycles

For further information please contact Dr Louise Jennings, Research & Laboratory Manager.

Wear of knee joints

The Leeds/Prosim Force/Displacement Controlled Knee Simulator

The Leeds/Prosim knee simulator has six stations. Each station has six degrees of freedom, with four controlled axes of motion – axial load, femoral flexion, tibial interior/exterior (I/E) rotation and tibial anterior/posterior (A/P) displacement.

The AP translation can be driven in either force or displacement control.

Within the institute we have 3 knee joint simulators.

Typical test involves 3 experimental and 3 control prosthesis samples. Wear of the tibial insert is measured gravimetrically.

Load : ISO 14243 (2002)
Cycle rate : 1 Hz
Motion: ISO 14243 (2002) and Physiological
Orientation : Normal, upright
Lubricant : 25% bovine serum, 0.03% Sodium Azide

Typical test duration: 5 million cycles (6 months)
Measurement intervals: 0, 1, 3, 5 million cycles
Lubricant change: Every 330,000 cycles
