Engineering empathy: How Leeds has partnered with REMAP to transform disabled people’s lives

Date

Students from the University of Leeds are teaming up with REMAP, a UK charity that transforms lives by creating bespoke solutions for people with disabilities.

The collaboration will see students in mechanical and medical engineering and product design work alongside REMAP volunteers to design and adapt equipment that will help with everything from mobility and personal care to enabling people to pursue their hobbies and ambitions.

The pioneering partnership was sparked by Leeds alumna, Fareda AlWakeel, who started volunteering with the charity after finishing her degree. Her experience inspired Dr Tony Herbert, Undergraduate Programme Lead for Medical Engineering, to establish this formal collaboration between REMAP and the University

Dr Herbert said “This collaboration gives our engineering students the chance to apply their skills to real-world problems with real human impact. It’s about using engineering to make a meaningful difference and preparing graduates to become the next generation of socially responsible engineers.”
